An explosion took place at the VECTOR National Research Center on Virology and Biotechnology, near the Russian city of Novosibirsk. The research center has one of the most comprehensive collections of dangerous viruses in the world.
On September 16, the Russian consumer safety watchdog said that a gas cylinder had exploded on the fifth floor of a six-story laboratory building during repair work in the city of Koltsovo.
City Mayor Nikolai Krasnikov said the laboratory was not working during the repair work.
The explosion was followed by a fire in an area of 30 square meters that has since been extinguished.
A worker was hospitalized for third degree burns.
Rospotrebnadzor and the mayor insisted that the room in which the explosion occurred did not contain any harmful biological substances.
All the glass in the building would have been broken during the explosion.
In the years 1970-1980, the research center developed biological and bacteriological weapons, as well as means of protection against them.
Under the supervision of Rospotrebnadzor, the center stores dangerous strains of smallpox, charcoal, Ebola and other viruses.
