U.S. Representative Tim Ryan has tested positive for COVID-19 – despite being vaccinated – and is in quarantine at his home.

Ryan, D-Howland, announced Monday that he has a groundbreaking case of COVID-19.

“Although I currently have mild symptoms, I am grateful that I have the protection of a safe and effective vaccine, and I know that without it this disease could be much worse. “ he said.

Ryan said he tested negative for COVID-19 three times in the past 10 days before testing positive on Monday.

Ryan said he will continue in Congress by voting remotely until he can safely return to Washington, DC

“What we have learned over the past year and a half is that we are in the same boat and I urge all Ohioans to help us crush this pandemic by wearing a mask and getting us vaccinated so that we can get back to normal. “ he said.

“I want to sincerely thank Mercy Health who treated me, as well as the healthcare workers in Ohio who fight COVID-19 on the front lines daily. You are the real heroes of this pandemic. “

Ryan, who is running for the US Senate next year, was scheduled to organize a fundraiser for the campaign on Saturday at a private residence in Poland.

The fundraiser will either be postponed or virtual, said Christopher Anderson of Boardman, one of the event’s hosts and leader of the Ohio Young Democrats.

“Unfortunately, revolutionary cases are happening” he said. “I’m glad Tim’s symptoms are mild.”

When the event was going to take place in person, Anderson said, those in attendance should have been vaccinated and the hosts would follow all guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ryan caught the nation’s attention when he criticized complaints from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on July 28 over the CDC’s recommendations for wearing face masks on House floors as the Delta variant of the virus was spreading. The recommendation led to the United States Capitol’s attending physician, the top physician in Congress, to require members of the House to wear masks again even though some Republicans refused to comply.

“I just find it absolutely immature and appalling to drop in some way (COVID-19) to try and score cheap political points and that’s exactly what we saw a few minutes ago,” Ryan said upstairs. “It’s below a minority leader of one of the major political parties in the United States of America who says we shouldn’t be taking any precautions.”

He added: “Just stop with this madness.” We try to be safe, trying to protect our family members, our children, our parents, our relatives and the minority leader laughs at this, laughs at this and laughs at the best doctor. “

Ryan said of the masks at the time: “I hate these things. It’s terrible to have to do this again. We do it because the best doctor for all of us asks us to. “
