Bobby Diggs, aka RZA of the Wu-Tang clan, used a curious analogy when talking with TheWrap about Hulu's next scripted series about the rise of the legendary rap band: he said it was like "preparing a pie for the Yam".
RZA described both the feelings of his co-creator and Alex Tse about seeking the participation of members of the real Wu-Tang clan. We will let him explain it from here.
"We know we are making a sweet potato pie and we know it requires ingredients. And we know that this guy has good nutmeg and that he has good butter. But we also know where to find nutmeg and butter. And we make this pie. Some members will be in town and say, "Oh, let's go to the writers room." And maybe they will not come on time. Some members, they are right there. "

RZA is a co-creator of the series, with Method Man also involved. Ghostface Killa, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa, and GZA, members of the Wu-Tang clan group, act as grower producers, alongside Ol 'Dirty Bastard's estate.
"We have included guys as much as possible," continued RZA. "Some guys, like Method Man, had a total voice over who was going to play it." He said that many of their real-life counterparts spent time with the actors who played them. Some of the original members like Ghostface Killa and Raekwon wrote the lyrics of their characters. "If you look at this whole ball, it's a lot of Wu's infusion."
RZA said that for his own character, played by Ashton Sanders, star of "Moonlight", he knew exactly when he wanted to launch it.
"Ashton's eyes understood me, I neglected Ashton," he explained, "I was in a plane and guess what?" Equalizer 2 "was there [Sanders co-starred in the movie]. And I had seen it before, but I did not see it. And this time I saw him and saw him. This is the kind of guy and the eyes that Bobby needs and needs.

The series takes place in the early 90s in New York, at the height of the crack epidemic. The show traces the formation of Wu-Tang while Diggs (Sanders) strives to bring together a dozen young black men shared between music and crime. They end up becoming the non-faithful of American success stories. Alongside Sanders, the show stars Shameik Moore, Dave East, Siddiq Saunderson, Marcus Callender, Julian Elijah Martinez, Zolee Griggs, Erika Alexander, TJ Atoms and Johnell Young.
The series is partially based on the "Wu-Tang Manual" books and its follow-up, "Tao of Wu", which approaches RZA's path to enlightenment and its philosophical tendencies. RZA said it was important to incorporate this aspect into the series, notably by explaining how it was inspired by "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" – to which Wu-Tang paid tribute with the title of their first studio album, "36 Chambers".
"We were very aware that philosophy and spirituality are part of the Wu element. And so we put it into reality," RZA said. "That he discovers it in comics, on the street or in the street. That he discovers it in the church or that he discovers it while watching the movie on Kung-Fu. "
