On which planet has signed Aaron Dell and Craig anderson as goalies this offseason makes sense for the Buffalo Sabers? None to my knowledge. Together the two Guardians signed for $ 1.5 million and there were certainly better options even in this price bracket. Here are my top 3 options:
# 1) Braden Holtby:
Yes he’s getting older and yes he didn’t have a good year last season but he would be better than Anderson and Dell. He would also have been a great mentor for Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, in the same way that Olaf Kolzig was for him. It cost the Dallas Stars $ 2 million for a one-year contract. The Sabers could have signed it, jumped on both Dell and Anderson, and paid just $ 500,000 more. He would also have added some credibility to a team that is sorely lacking in this area.
# 2) Brian Elliott and David Rittich Combo:
Both are veterans, but they’ve been a lot more reliable lately than Andersen and Dell. Elliott has helped prepare young goalies like Carter Hart and Jordan Binnington, and Rittich has seen a lot more action than Anderson and Dell in recent years. Elliott and Riddick reportedly cost around $ 2.15 million combined, which isn’t a ton more than the Dell / Andersen combo.
# 3 Aaron Dell and Alex Lyon Combo:
Dell is usable but cannot be relied on to play a starting role. Alex Lyon is only 28 years old and in good shape. In his short stints with the Flyers he looked stable and his overall career in the AHL has been impressive. I would take him to Andersen any day of the week. It would only have cost about $ 800 to $ 900,000.
Do you feel a theme here? There were much better options compared to what the Sabers ended up doing. For a team that isn’t supposed to be good defensively, now you can tell they probably won’t be strong in goal either. Does anyone know where Dominik Hasek and Ryan Miller are ???
