Safe exit from Afghanistan after grueling journey – KIRO 7 news Seattle

A man from Seattle is still waiting for his family to return tonight, but at least he knows they’re safe outside of Afghanistan.

This Seattle man has asked us again to hide his identity because his wife’s family is still in Afghanistan and those who helped her out are still in danger.

“They have tried so many times to go through these doors and could not,” he said.

But his wife, daughter and other family members eventually got on the plane. He received a phone call from his wife on Thursday evening.

“The sense and the feeling that took over my body, thank goodness you know it was an amazing feeling,” he said.

But with the chaos outside, how did they get safely inside? We asked if soldiers had left the airport to collect them.

“Yes exactly. Right. There were people there to help them,” he replied.

The Army’s 82nd Airborne posted photos of people the troops picked up using their Chinook helicopters to retrieve them away from the airport chaos. The man we spoke with wouldn’t say if his family arrived at the airport this way.

His wife describes a grueling trip, landing in Qatar and taking off for Bahrain because Qatar was too crowded. Then they landed in Qatar and spent 16 hours inside the plane on the ground before they could exit.

“They spent a very long time in a plane, a very long time on the tarmac. But, at the end of the day, they’re in good hands, ”the man said.

Having escaped the danger of Afghanistan, his family are now at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. It is not yet known when his wife and the others will return to Seattle.

“She’s just, you know, ready to continue the journey home.” Law. She just wants to, you know, she just, for some reason, still scared. She just wants to be able to be on American soil, ”he said.
