New Orleans Saints legend Zach Strief, the team’s play-by-play announcer for the past three seasons, announced Friday that he is leaving WWL (WWL-870 AM / 105.3 FM) to become the coach deputy of the offensive line of the Saints.
Strief will be mentored by Dan Roushar, New Orleans ‘offensive line coach since 2016. During the 2020 season, the Saints’ offensive line was blocked for an attack that led the league in touchdowns to the rushing (30) and averaging 141.6 yards per game on the floor, sixth-best in the NFL.
Strief joined the WWL radio team after a 12-year career with the Saints as an offensive tackle. The Cincinnati native and Northwestern University graduate replaced local broadcast icon Jim Henderson, who retired in 2018. Strief worked with Deuce McAllister, the all-time leader of the Saints, to bring fans a dynamic perspective on the Saints games and shows on the flagship station. Strief became one of the few former players who acquired the skills to be a play-by-play announcer and he also served in various host roles on the WWL radio platform.
“Fortunately, I won’t be far,” Strief said on Friday. “My love for football and my relationship with the Saints just called me to this post. I played for Coach (Sean) Payton for 12 years and worked for Mr. and Mrs. Benson and Mickey (Loomis). I learned a lot from everyone and I want to continue to grow as a professional. The opportunity to help the Saints win another world championship is too great for me to pass up. It’s time for me to go home. “
The team expects to make an official announcement regarding all coaching changes at a later date.
