ELKO – Seventeen suspected cases of salmonella were reported in Elko this week, according to the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services.

The grid at Gold Dust West is the presumed source of the disease, confirmed Martha Framsted, Public Information Officer, in an email.

"The staff of the division has been on site since Monday, March 11," said Framsted. "The company has not been closed and cooperates with the investigation."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 23,000 people are hospitalized each year in the United States with Salmonella. The agency has reported no less than 450 deaths over the course of a year.

Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal cramping beginning 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness can last up to a week. Most people recover with treatment.

"This is an ongoing investigation and I will provide additional information as the investigation progresses," Framsted said.

John East, chief operating officer of Jacob's Entertainment, owner of Gold Dust West, confirmed that the company was working with health officials to uncover the source of the problem.

"We are cooperating with the health department to identify products and possible causes," East said. "The preliminary investigation of the Ministry of Health has revealed no cause related to Gold Dust West [employees’] handling of food products. "

According to East, the investigation currently focuses on food suppliers and suppliers.

"The Ministry of Health has asked us to remove the eggs from the menu and we have complied with that," he said.
