Samsung's new Galaxy A90 aims to make 5G more affordable

After details of the Galaxy A90 5G leaked less than 24 hours ago, Samsung has confirmed that the third of its smartphones to benefit from 5G treatment will not be an expensive flagship product, but will instead come from the Galaxy A mid-range series.

Following the previous Galaxy S10 5G and the Galaxy Note 10 5G, the A90 5G aims to offer the same connectivity ready for the future as Samsung's high-end handsets, but at a much lower cost.

Although the official price has not yet been announced at this stage, it is expected to be launched in Korea tomorrow (September 4, 2019) and would cost around KRW 900,000, or about $ 740 (£ 610). Whatever the final price, the Galaxy A90 5G will almost certainly be lower than the Galaxy S10 5G, which is priced at $ 1,299 / AU $ 1,099 / AU $ 1,999.

That said, the cost of the mid-range market has evolved considerably in recent years. Samsung Galaxy A70 £ 369 in the United Kingdom (A $ 649, approximately US $ 445) and Galaxy A80 will cost you £ 579 (about $ 700 / $ 1,030 AU), which probably drives you to the high end.

Whereas the A90 5G will ship a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 – the latest Qualcomm chipset that's found in many of Android's flagship products – as well as an AMOLED 6.7-inch FHD + display (1 080 x 2,400), this handset will likely be the most expensive line-up phone available … it can still be considered for the category at all.

Other features confirmed for the A90 5G include a triple bay, with a 48MP main camera and two other cameras dedicated respectively to depth-of-field tours and ultra-wide shots.

These are backed by a variety of artificial intelligence tools to help you optimize your shots. A 32-megapixel front camera with a similar arsenal of software tips to enhance your selfie is housed in a small notch at the front.

Samsung also promises a dedicated Game Booster mode, 6GB or 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage (plus a microSD card slot), a 4,500mAh battery with ultra-fast 25W charging, an easy-to-use drive. Fingerprints on the screen, facial recognition and compatibility with DeX Mode.

Samsung has announced that the Galaxy A90 5G will be available in black and white from September 4th in Korea and "will then expand to other markets". Australia is one of those confirmed markets, but price and availability information was still to be confirmed at the time of writing.
