SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A nine-year-old San Antonio girl has died days after testing positive for COVID-19, says her family, who are now trying to shed light on the impact of COVID-19 on children.
Makenzie Gongora, a fourth grade, was taken into care after school when she started to feel ill, her aunt Victoria Southworth told KSAT.
“Kenzie was complaining of a really bad headache and then they took her temperature and she had a fever,” Southworth said.
Gongora’s mother took her to Brooke Army Medical Center, where the nine-year-old later tested positive for COVID-19, according to Southworth, who says doctors told Gongora’s family “The standard thing they said to parents of children with COVID, especially without breathing problems, to keep an eye on her, keep her comfortable.”
Southworth said her family kept an eye on her over the weekend and Gongora appeared to be doing better. “She seemed to be recovering. There were times when she wasn’t feeling very well. She started throwing up at one point,” Southworth said.

According to Southworth, on February 1, the girl complained of feeling tired and having a stomach ache. She went to bed and her mother went to see her.
Gongora died shortly after midnight, Southworth says. Gongora’s family believe the girl’s death was related to COVID, but they are still awaiting a report from the medical examiner.
“We want to raise awareness because whatever the cause of this, it just takes a general change in the way people approach children and COVID,” Southworth said.
Gongora is expected to be buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
