The first pediatric death from COVID-19 in San Diego County was confirmed by the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) on Friday. The patient was a 10 year old boy with underlying health conditions.
Her death has been characterized as “another sad milestone” amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed the lives of more than 450,000 people in the United States, 43,000 in California and 2,700 in San Diego County.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of this child,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, County Public Health Officer. “The death of this boy is a grim reminder that this pandemic is affecting everyone in our community, regardless of age, and we must do all we can to protect each other and slow the spread of the virus. “
The county has only reported two COVID-19-related deaths involving patients between the ages of 10 and 19, and none between 0 and 9. Those two deaths represent about 0.1% of the county’s 2,777 total deaths.
