Here is today’s COVID-19 update from the County Health and Human Services Agency with data through April 22.

Progress of vaccination:

  • More than 2.65 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been delivered in the region and nearly 2.45 million have been recorded as administered. This number includes both county residents and those working in San Diego County.
  • Overall, more than 1.35 million people in the county have received at least one injection of the two-dose vaccine. This is 50.3% of those eligible, an important step in the fight against the pandemic.
  • Of those vaccinated to date, more than 880,000 county residents, or 32.7% of San Diegans aged 16 and over, are fully vaccinated.
  • The goal is to vaccinate completely 75% of San Diego County residents aged 16 and over or 2,017,011 people. To date, 67.0% of the target population has received at least one vaccine and 43.7% are fully vaccinated.
  • Those who received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which was approved for use by the FDA on Friday, April 23, 2021 after a break for an adverse reaction study in a small number of recipients, are added to the San total. Diegans fully vaccinated. The county is awaiting advice from the California Department of Public Health on how to proceed with the vaccine.
  • The county is awaiting further information from the California Department of Public Health before use of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine resumes in the region.
  • The difference between the doses shipped and the number of vaccinations administered represents approximately what should be used in the next seven days and the doses that still need to be entered into the recording system.

Status measurements:

  • The adjusted case rate calculated by the state of San Diego County is currently 6.1 cases per 100,000 population (as of April 20).
  • The county remains in orange level or level 3 under new state guidelines. The California Department of Public Health says that unless there are extenuating circumstances, such as a low vaccination rate, a county will only move to a more restrictive level if hospitalizations increase significantly among vulnerable people, especially among those vaccinated, and both positivity tests and adjusted case rates show a worrying increase in transmission. This is currently not the case in the region.
  • Currently, the percentage of positive tests is 2.4%, placing the county at level 3 or orange level.
  • The county’s health equity measure, which examines the positivity of testing for areas with the lowest health conditions, is 3.0% and is also found in Orange level or 3.
  • The CDPH assesses counties on a weekly basis. The next report is scheduled for Tuesday April 27.

Epidemics in community settings:

  • A new community outbreak was confirmed on April 22 in a commercial setting.
  • In the past seven days (April 16-22), 21 community outbreaks have been confirmed.
  • The number of community epidemics remains above the trigger point of seven or more in seven days.
  • A community-based outbreak is defined as three or more cases of COVID-19 in one setting and in people from different households in the past 14 days.

Trial:

  • 14,708 tests were reported to the county on April 22 and the percentage of new positive cases was 2%.
  • The 14-day moving average percentage of positive cases is 1.8%. The target is less than 8.0%.
  • The daily 7-day test average is 12,322.

Cases, hospitalizations and admissions to intensive care:

  • 329 cases of COVID-19 were reported to the county on April 22. The region’s total is now 275,096.
  • A total of 1,145 duplicate cases were identified through quality assurance processes. These cases were removed from the case tally on April 23, 2021.
  • 15,137 or 5.5% of all cases required hospitalization.
  • 1,670 or 0.6% of all cases and 11% of hospitalized cases required admission to an intensive care unit.

Deaths:

  • No new deaths from COVID-19 were reported on April 22. The total for the region is 3,684.
