San Francisco mayor defiant after being caught maskless at nightclub despite warrant: no need for ‘fun police’

San Francisco Mayor London Breed remained staunchly suspicious of her behavior on Friday after she was pictured at a city jazz club dancing and singing without a mask earlier this week despite a city warrant.

“While I eat and drink I’m going to keep my mask on,” Breed, a Democrat, told reporters while calling the story a “distraction,” according to Bay Area FOX 2. “And yes, back when we drank like everyone else there, we all had fun and still got vaccinated.”

The mayor insisted that media attention should be focused on live music returning to San Francisco and said putting a mask between eating and drinking was “unrealistic”.

“The fact that it’s even a story is sad,” she said.

But the City of Breed’s ordinance, one of the strictest in the country, requires masks indoors, vaccinated or not, unless the person is actively eating or drinking.

“My drink was sitting at the table. I got up and started dancing because I was feeling the spirit and I wasn’t thinking of a mask,” Breed explained. “I thought I was having a good time and in the process I followed the sanitary guidelines.”

Breed added that she and her club mates “don’t need the funny police to come in and micromanage and tell us what we should or shouldn’t be doing.”

“The fact that this story is about me and less about the artists and the nightlife, which I will continue to enjoy in San Francisco, is very unfortunate,” she told reporters.

Breed announced the need for the new mask mandate in August as the Delta variant continued to spread, according to FOX 2.

“Our economy and our livelihoods, and our kids going back to school, and everything else depends on it,” she said at the time.

Smile and party

Photos and video from the event showed almost no one in the club wearing a mask.

The Black Cat Nightclub’s Instagram page posted, and then deleted, a photo showing Breed smiling and partying with friends without a mask on Wednesday night, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. She was accompanied by Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza and singer Raphael Saadiq.

A Chronicle reporter also tweeted a video of Breed singing and dancing.

Breed previously told The Chronicle that she often tests for COVID-19 and that “at the end of the day everyone who comes here has to show proof of vaccination. I am very reassured.”

“I have been very careful, not only because I want to lead by example, but because I don’t want to have COVID. I also want to make sure that I am not someone who transmits COVID to others. ‘other people,’ she said. “This whole pandemic has been about the safety of people. “

Do not “play your role”

But his actions have always frustrated San Franciscans, including some Democrats.

“She was very clear that everyone has to do their part, we are not out of the woods. The San Francisco rules have been very restrictive, and I don’t see her playing her part in this photo,” said Danielle Rabkin, Crossfit Owner of Golden Gate Gym, according to KNTV-TV.

“I’m a registered Democrat and voted for her,” wrote one Twitter user, according to KPIX-TV in San Francisco. “I love you Madam Mayor, but it’s all over the news.… You will have to address the public.”

“I don’t know if it’s a moment at a club that is the biggest offense, but I agree that she has a little greater responsibility to always lead by example,” said Naveen Baraj, resident of KNTV.

This isn’t the first time Breed has come under fire for breaking her own coronavirus rules. She was spotted in the chic French Laundry restaurant in November having dinner with seven other people to celebrate the birthday of a friend, socialite Goretti Lo Lui, the same restaurant Governor Gavin Newsom was criticized for having dined without a mask at about the same time.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who represents San Francisco in Congress, was criticized in 2020 for not wearing a mask in a barbershop that was due to be closed due to the coronavirus.
