About two weeks after July 4, Santa Barbara County is experiencing an increase in coronavirus cases.
County health official Henning Ansorg says the increase is not surprising.
“We are seeing the expected increase in the number of cases due to the many shifts and mixtures,” Ansorg said.
County officials say the public health department remains vigilant while assessing the increase, noting that the Delta variant poses a higher threat to transmission.
At last count, Santa Barbara County reported 50 active cases of COVID-19. 50.9% of people in the county are fully vaccinated.
Health officials recommend continuing to take safety precautions, such as wearing a mask indoors, avoiding crowded events, and staying home if you feel unwell.
They say the Delta variant is attributed to groundbreaking cases, which occur when fully vaccinated people contract the virus. However, these cases have not been linked to severe symptoms of the disease that require hospitalization.
“We have a method of preventing serious illness and hospitalizations due to the COVID-19 Delta variant that we know is effective,” said Van Do-Reynoso, county public health director. “It’s getting vaccinated.”
