County health officials are now ordering local hospitals to begin administering large numbers of Moderna vaccines that were halted earlier this week due to a potential increased risk of allergic reactions.
Santa Clara County received approximately 21,800 doses of Moderna 41L20A batch distributed in early January, and more than 330,000 of those doses have been distributed statewide. Health officials have suspended administration of the batch after several people had allergic reactions at a San Diego vaccination site last week.
Earlier this week, local hospitals said they had not given any vaccines from the batch or given any before the break, but had not recorded any allergic reactions.
“These results confirm that the systems in place to ensure vaccine safety are working as they should,” said Dr. Sara Cody, Santa Clara County Public Health Officer. “This latest rigorous scientific review of possible allergic reactions has once again confirmed that the vaccine is safe… The people of Santa Clara County can be confident that vaccinating our community against COVID-19 will save lives and serve as a way out of the pandemic. ”
California State Epidemiologist Dr Erica Pan said the decision to resume vaccinations from the batch was made after a Scientific Safety Review Panel was convened, as well as other allergy and immunology specialists across the state.
“These results should continue to give Californians confidence that vaccines are safe and effective, and that the systems in place to ensure vaccine safety are rigorous and science-based,” said Pan. “My family members who qualified to receive the vaccine as healthcare workers or because of their age have already received the COVID-19 vaccine, and I encourage all Californians to get the vaccine when it is. is their turn.
As of January 21, the county had reported 94,905 cumulative COVID-19 cases and 1,129 deaths.
