SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – The Sarasota Memorial Hospital has reached another record high number of COVID-19 cases.

On Friday, Dr. Manuel Gordillo of Sarasota Memorial Hospital sent the following statement to the Sarasota County School District:

“Today we set a new record for the number of cases. No sign of slowing down. The opening of schools may exacerbate the upward trend. Staff issues at the hospital have worsened as our staff with children who have been quarantined have to stay home with them. We are in a symbiotic relationship and the downstream effects are quite significant. A public health crisis leading to a health care delivery crisis like we have never seen before. “

According to the Coronavirus Daily News Update webpage on the SMH website, on Friday there were 256 patients in the hospital with COVID. 54 of these patients are in intensive care. Hospital officials reported that 86% of COVID-19 cases in hospital on Thursday are unvaccinated people.

The ICU currently has 85 patients in total, with a capacity of 97. The hospital currently has a total of 797 patients with a total capacity of 839 beds.
