Satellite measurements of the Earth's "skin temperature" have confirmed that global warming is heating up the planet.
The infrared-sensitive mapping system was used to record temperature trends from 2003 to 2017.
He showed a warming pattern consistent with other terrestrial measurements.
Dr. Joel Susskind, of the Goddard Space Flight Center of the US Space Agency Nasa, said: "Both datasets demonstrate that the Earth's surface has warmed around the world during this period , and that 2016, 2017 and 2015 were the hottest years in history., in that order. "
The satellite system, called Airs (infrared atmospheric sounder), records the temperature on the surface of the ocean, land and snow-covered regions.
His results were compared to data from Goddard Institute stations for surface temperature analysis (Gistemp).
The results are published in the journal Environmental Research Letters.
Dr. Gavin Schmidt, co-author, also from the Goddard Institute, said, "Interestingly, our results revealed that the surface datasets may underestimate temperature changes in the Arctic.
"This means that the warming that is happening at the poles could happen faster than previously thought."
