A new study suggests that there is a scientific reason why men heal faster than women when they have the flu.
Johns Hopkins School researchers decided to study the different effects of influenza on men and women. The study, published in the journal Sexuality Biology, says that although we know that women have more influenza than men, the cause has not yet been confirmed.
The team conducted the study by infecting live mice and human cells extracted from males, with a lethal dose of H1N1, which is a strain of influenza A that caused a global pandemic between 2009 and 2010, killing more than 18,000 people worldwide.
The researchers found that male rats and human cells produced more amphiregulin.
It is believed that the increase in amphiregulin production in male rats and in human cells allowed to heal the influenza strain more quickly and that the recovery time of male rats producing a lower growth rate was similar to that of Healing female rats.
Professor Sabra Klein, who works as a psychologist, an assistant professor at Bloomberg College said that future flu treatments that boost amphiregulin production could be especially beneficial for women.
However, the research team found a potential link between growth factor production and the recovery of influenza. The reason that men are more likely to produce higher levels of amphiregulin than women.
One possible explanation is the high rate of testosterone in men.
