He was the mysterious man who had gained viral notoriety by buying Girl Scout cookies for $ 540 worth, so that girls do not have to stand out in the cold. And now, attracting the attention of a completely different kind, he was arrested Tuesday at his home in Greenville, South Carolina, for drug trafficking.

The man, identified as Detric Lee McGowan, 46, appeared in federal court; he faces drug and conspiracy charges related to the manufacture of heroin pills and fentanyl.

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents have been investigating McGowan for six months and planning to stop him on Tuesday, long before the photo of his smile beside two scouts became viral.

"It was a coincidence," Fox News told a DEA source.

McGowan "used her story of buying $ 540 of Girl Scout cookies to falsely spotlight herself on the pretext of being a pillar of the community; in fact, he is a community outcast, "said Robert J. Murphy, DEA's Special Agent for the DEA Field Division in Atlanta. "His criminal conduct did not bring any positive benefit to the community of Greenville, but only caused immeasurable and indescribable pain to many families with opioid addiction.

"Now that this defendant is behind bars, the community of Greenville can celebrate the true heroes (the dedicated men / women of law enforcement) who work tirelessly to make their community a safe place to raise families. . "

The viral Facebook post, which has been circulated more than 9,000 times, revealed that McGowan initially purchased seven boxes of biscuits for girls, who had set up a stand in front of a store in Greenville.

He gave them $ 40 and told them to keep the change. Then later, he came back and spent another $ 500 to buy each box of cookies that the girls were selling.

"Pack all your cookies. I take them all so you can all get out of this cold, "McGowan told the girls, according to the Facebook post.

McGowan never gave his name to the scouts, but the DEA knew him.
