SC reports more than 2,400 new cases of COVID-19, 9 deaths

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – On Monday, the Department of Environmental Health and Control reported 1,852 new confirmed cases and 615 probable new cases of the virus for a total of 2,467. These figures are correct as of August 7.

The difference between confirmed and probable cases is based on the type of test a person receives. The probable cases are treated as cases confirmed by the doctors, specifies the DHEC.

On Monday, DHEC reported eight new confirmed deaths and one probable new death.

DHEC is no longer giving a death date for these reports, saying it violates the privacy of the deceased due to the decrease in deaths from COVID-19 statewide.

The agency has also stopped sharing the age range of people who die from COVID-19 each day, but it publishes weekly reports with this information on Tuesday.

While new cases of COVID-19 were down in South Carolina in June, cases have been on the rise since mid-July.

The number of COVID-19 cases remains low from the winter outbreak, but the number of cases is increasing – reaching levels not seen in South Carolina since before the vaccine was readily available.

Hospitalizations in the state are also increasing, with dozens of new people hospitalized each day with COVID-19. However, the total number of people hospitalized for COVID still represents about a third of the total number of hospitalizations in December and January.

One positive indicator is that new deaths from COVID-19 are relatively small compared to the virus’s winter surge, while it was not uncommon to report more than 30 deaths in a day.

As of August 7, DHEC reported that South Carolina residents eligible for the vaccine:

• 52.7% received at least one vaccine – 2,265,047 people
• 45.2% are fully vaccinated – 1,942,524 people

PERCENTAGE OF POSITIVE MONITORING

Percentage positive refers to the number of people who tested positive for COVID-19 compared to the number of tests performed.

DHEC reports that the percentage of positive results on the 21,589 molecular tests most recently reported to them was 12.3% (not counting antibody tests).

COVID-19 HOSPITALIZATIONS

From Monday, the US Department of Health and Human Services claims that 78.01% of inpatient beds in South Carolina are in use while 77.88% of intensive care beds are in use.

There are 1,124 hospital patients who have COVID-19, HHS reported. Of these patients, 307 are in intensive care.

As of August 2, DHEC reported 1,903 ventilators available in the state, of which 460 are in service. 87 of them are COVID-19 patients.

NOTE: DHEC now only updates its hospitalization dashboard once a week, which is why WIS now relies on HHS data for a daily hospitalization report. Fan numbers will be updated weekly on Tuesday.

MONITORING MIS-C AND VIRUS VARIANTS

DHEC has a dashboard that indicates the number of cases of Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19 in South Carolina.

It also shows how much case of different variants were found as is, by type.

As of August 4, there have been 248 reported cases of the highly contagious delta variant of COVID-19 in South Carolina. However, health officials say there are likely many more cases of the delta variant in the state. DHEC only sends a random sample of positive tests to look for variants.
