Scariest Remastered Pokes Fun at Original NPCs

The nightmarish sailors of the original Spider-Man title from Insomniac are back and more gruesome than ever in the PS5 remaster.

As a nod to the fans, Marvel’s Spider-Manof PlayStation 5 remaster has recreated the infamous boat navigation monstrosities of the 2018 game with love. Insomniac games Spider Man released two years ago as a gorgeous and wonderfully detailed game, which is why fans panicked when they stumbled upon some of the most disgusting NPCs known to modern gaming. The objectively irrelevant background characters were never meant to be seen, but players found a way and circulated the distorted images of the model around the internet, resulting in a kind of inner joke for fans of the Game.

Reactions to PS5 Spider-Man: Remastered were all over the place before the game launched. Many were upset that Peter Parker had major cosmetic surgery. According to Insomniac, the Peter Parker who had become familiar to fans in the 2018 version of the game needed to be redesigned to better match the team’s vision. The studio explained the change saying that the new facial model would match the voice actor more closely. There have also been a lot of concerns about how the game is making the leap to the next generation of consoles. At least one of those issues was resolved when the studio recently detailed how fans can transfer saves from the PlayStation 4 version of the game to the remaster.

Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, not everything is changed from the original game in the PS5 Spider Man remaster. IGN immersed in the return of the nightmarish NPCs and sailing in all their ill-rendered glory. Apparently, the characters look even more surprising in the remaster than in the 2018 game, simply because of the game’s improved graphics. The improved lighting features, the article explains, make the numbers “look even more horrible. The developer also added a little extra joke just for the fans. One of the warped humanoids has a sticky note stuck to his shirt that asks the reader if he missed the spooky NPCs. It’s unclear whether a reference like this made its way to Spider-Man: Miles Morales or if it was a special nod just to the original game.

Although he may or may not get homunculi sailing by boat, Spider-Man: Miles Morales has its own secrets for fans, like a statue in honor of Stan Lee. The creator of some of the most well-known comic book heroes of all time, the recently deceased Stan Lee made an appearance in the 2018 game of Insomniac and his likeness is now remembered in Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Wild-looking Sailors are such a fun Easter egg for Insomniac to include in the PS5 remaster of Marvel’s Spider-Man, especially given its potentially limited audience. To understand the joke, a player would have to listen enough not only to the original game, but also to the speech surrounding it. But for those who recognize these horrible characters and know the history of the game, it’s a treat.
