Scenes from a record-breaking winter storm

A winter storm from coast to coast brought snow and ice across the country from Seattle to San Antonio and brought freezing temperatures and power outages in areas unaccustomed to winter conditions rigorous.

According to the National Weather Service, at least 150 million Americans were subject to weather or ice alerts.

The Southwest Power Pool, which manages the power grid in at least part of 14 states, has ordered member electric utilities to begin controlled outages in power service because demand for power in the region, driven by the freezing cold, overwhelmed the system.

“This is an unprecedented event and marks the first time that SPP has to call for controlled outages,” said Lanny Nickell, chief operating officer of the power pool, in a statement.

Bitter temperatures are expected to persist from the Rocky Mountains to the Appalachians through Tuesday, with readings 25 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit below normal for this time of year, the National Weather Service said.
