In November, scientists from more than 60 countries came together to redefine the kilogram, basic unit mass of the International System of Units (SI).

As of Monday, it is now defined by the relationship between energy and mass – and as this physics-based approach is inherently stable, experts believe that the new definition will improve the quality of science.

The new definition will not change the meaning of a kilogram for most people. However, the physical cylinder used previously to define it would sometimes lose a few atoms, and this slight deviation could affect the scientific measures in a detrimental way.

But this will no longer be a problem now that a kilogram is defined as equal to the mass of 1.4755214 x 1040 photons, each with a frequency corresponding to a cesium atomic clock.
