Scientists stumble upon the secret caves of the last Neanderthals

Researchers have discovered a hidden chamber that has been closed for at least 40,000 years on the Rock of Gibraltar, where Neanderthals are estimated to have lived longer. over 100,000 years.

Archaeologists from the National Museum of Gibraltar began studying Vanguard Cave, part of the Gorham Cave complex, in 2012 to determine if the cave had any unknown passages or chambers that could be hidden by sediment.

Last month, researchers discovered a breach in the sediment and discovered a “large chamber at the back” of the cave.

“The preliminary investigation revealed a depth of 13 meters [42-feet] chamber on the very roof of the cave, ”the researchers said in a press release.

The team discovered a number of interesting finds in the chamber, including remains of lynx, hyenas and griffon vultures, as well as scratches on the walls made by an unidentified carnivore.

A large whelk shell was also found at the bottom of the cave, an interesting find since the chamber is a good distance from the coast.

“The whelk is at the bottom of this cave … it’s probably about 20 meters from the beach,” Clive Finlayson, director and chief scientist at the National Museum of Gibraltar, told CNN.

“Someone took that whelk in there … over 40,000 years ago. So that already gave me a clue that people have been in there, which maybe it isn’t. not too surprising. These people, because of their age, can only be Neanderthals, “he told the outlet.

The Gorham Cave Complex is made up of four caves and is believed to be the last known Neanderthal habitat in Europe.
