The world's first black hole photo, revealed last April, is the result of a collaboration of 347 astronomers from around the world. Today, these astronomers understand how to divide $ 3,000,000 into prizes for their hard work.

In case you missed the news in April, an international consortium of more than 300 astronomers managed to achieve something that previously thought impossible: they captured the photo of a black hole at the # 39, using a planetary array of eight ground telescopes. And now, they are awarded the revolutionary prize in fundamental physics, sometimes called "Oscar of Science", and $ 3 million in prizes to be shared among them.

You can learn more about how this photo was taken and why this is a breakthrough worth $ 3 million in the video below:

The picture, however, is only the beginning of a new era in black hole imaging. Shep Doeleman, project director, tells AFP that they are already working at the next stage: the video.

"What I predict, is that by the end of the next decade, we will produce high quality, real-time black hole films, which will not only reveal their appearance, but also their behavior. on the cosmic scene, "said Doeleman in an interview. "Maybe we'll make maybe the first raw movie [by 2020]. "
