Scott Walker – the pop icon of the 1960s, composer and avant-garde pioneer – has died, announced his 4AD label in a statement Monday morning (March 25) and confirmed to Pitchfork. He was 76 years old. His cause of death has not been revealed. Walker's career was a story. He started as a session musician, made huge hits with the Walker Brothers, became the object of adulation of teenage fans and later became an enigmatic pioneering avant-garde dark and experimental.
Walker was born Noel Scott Engel in Ohio. He gained a reputation for his distinctive baritone at the age of 13 with his single "When Is a Boy a Man". In 1965, he moved to England and began recording with the Walker Brothers. That year, the group published "Make It Easy on Yourself" (No. 1 in the United Kingdom and Canada). after posting "The sun is not going to shine any louder", information emerged about frantic fans invading the group and flipping their car while they were sitting inside. In 1967, the pop sensation died out and Walker released the first of four solo albums, all titled Scott.
Walker's first solo hits, led by covers by Belgian singer Jacques Brel, gave him greater creative autonomy. In 1969, he went out Scott 3, his first record includes more original songs than covers. His left field compositions slowed sales, which dropped dramatically with the ambitious Scott 4– later reevaluated as a master chef. Walker changed course, releasing a series of thick recordings.
