Students in LA County may soon have access to more mental health services due to the expansion of community school initiatives.

The motion, presented by Supervisors Kathryn Berger and Hilda L. Solis, will explore the potential to sustain and expand initiatives for schools in dire need of mental health services.

First adopted in January 2019, this initiative facilitated collaboration between the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and the Los Angeles County Department of Education to provide access to mental health services. The initiative was then expanded in April 2019 to provide prevention-focused mental health services.

“When students return to school full time, half the weight of last year is still weighing on them mentally and emotionally,” Supervisor Berger said. “This is an important time to expand our mental health services on site so that young people can thrive both in the classroom and in their daily lives. “

Currently, the program is implemented by 15 school sites and 10 regional teams with a total of 45 members spread across the county.
