Seafood-linked salmonella outbreak from Denver-based northeast seafood – CBS Denver

DENVER (CBS4)– The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment are investigating an outbreak of “Salmonella Thompson” in several states. The epidemic has sickened 102 people in 14 states.

Colorado had the majority of cases with 82 of the people living in 14 counties in Colorado. The cases have been linked to seafood manufactured or processed by Northeast Seafood Products, Inc. of Denver.

According to the CDC, the majority of those sick are either Colorado residents or have reported traveling to Colorado in the week before their illness. Only two people did not report traveling to Colorado in the week before their illness.

Denver-based Northeast Seafood Products, Inc. has recalled haddock, monkfish, bone-in trout, grouper, red snapper, red cod, perch, Pacific cod, halibut, coho salmon , servings of Atlantic salmon, snapper, tilapia, all natural Salmon fillet, Pacific sole and striped bass farmed on Fridays. These products have been sold to Albertsons, Safeway and Sprouts restaurants and supermarkets in Colorado. Pacific cod sold through Sprouts is not recalled. A complete list of the recalled products is available on the FDA website. At present, Northeast Seafood Products, Inc. has temporarily halted production

Consumers, restaurants and retailers should not eat, sell or serve the recalled seafood. The FDA recommends that anyone who purchased or received a recalled product check their refrigerators and freezers and discard the recalled product.

Most people infected with Salmonella suffer from diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Symptoms usually start 6 hours to 6 days after swallowing the bacteria. Most people recover without treatment after 4-7 days.

Some people, especially children under 5, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems, may have more serious illnesses that require medical treatment or hospitalization.
