The murky situation in New Orleans surrounding Michael Thomas’ delayed surgery eased when the star receiver posted a tweet Monday morning implying that he was keeping information that would paint a different picture than what has been reported.
“They tried to damage your reputation. You saved theirs by not telling your side of the story,” Thomas wrote.
Saints Coach Sean Payton was requested later if he wants to comment on the tweet. He refused.
“No. I don’t want to have a social media-based press conference,” Payton replied.
Thomas’ tweet came after Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune reported that the Broad had ignored calls from coaches and coaches for three months this offseason. Thomas’ social media response suggests there is a lot more to the story.
The All-Pro receiver underwent surgery to repair his ankle ligaments in June. With a four-month recovery schedule, Thomas is set to miss the start of the 2021 season.
Thomas missed eight games with an injury last year. He was struck out of another by the club on disciplinary grounds after hitting teammate Chauncey Gardner-Johnson in a practice brawl.
The injury and his drop in production last season put a cloud over Thomas’ future in New Orleans.
Payton was asked on Monday if he was concerned about players like Thomas becoming a social media distraction.
“We focus on our guys, and obviously we focus on Mike’s health, but other than that it’s never been a problem,” he said.
