The full moon in Libra gives us a chance to see things clearly
On March 28, our moon will be full in Libra. It is important to understand what a full moon in Libra can offer us, but it is also helpful to reflect on the path the moon has taken to fullness. This Libra full moon carries the lessons and themes of the March 13 new moon in Pisces to some kind of completion. I am writing “a kind of” to remind myself and to remind you that the lessons these lunar cycles offer us are never over, they keep changing shape. Whether we realize it or not, we spend a large portion of our days living from moon to moon, from great emotion to great emotion, life to death and back again. Under the Libra full moon, we can unload our grief on the big silver scale, then look the other way and ask: what balances this? How did I balance this? What anchored me in the land of the living? What can I rent? Can we appreciate what is beautiful without making demands on it? “Beauty is not enough,” wrote Edna (Ethereal Bisexual) St. Vincent Millay in his poem “Spring”. I think of his poem every year as April approaches, but I rarely think of the time it was written, right after World War I; just after the 1918 pandemic. “The spikes of the crocus. / The smell of the earth is good. / It is obvious that there is no death. / But what does that mean?” The poem announces the bright color of Aries and April – but it will not rush to leave the grief of Pisces and Mars. Above us, the Sun Aries looks towards Aries Venus above Chiron, which has been passing through the constellation Aries since the end of February 2019. When we keep our views narrowed, we see that between the self (Sun) and the life that the self admires (Venus) are the wounds (Chiron) that have shattered our efforts, our sense of our own beauty. Under the full moon in Libra, we are encouraged to expand our periphery, open up fully, and let others help us see ourselves. Collectively, change takes time and power is never simply surrendered. But Libra looks at Aries across the sky and says that when we come together with reverence, we strengthen each other as individuals. These two signs come back to us at each equinox and welcome us into their – our – negotiation. They are the signs of self and of the other, of passion and strategy, of fire and air.
