SEATTLE – Seattle Children’s Hospital confirmed its first patient death from COVID-19 on Tuesday.

Dr John McGuire, who works in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Seattle Children’s, said in a statement to KIRO 7 that the death occurred last week.

“It touches all of us close to home, and the patient and his family are on the minds and hearts of the Seattle children’s community,” McGuire said.

The hospital did not release details of the child’s age for confidentiality reasons.

Earlier this month, McGuire said they were treating more children with severe cases of COVID-19. He saw the rise.

“The people we see in the hospital are usually unvaccinated people, either teenagers who aren’t vaccinated, or younger people who can’t be vaccinated,” McGuire said. “We are clearly in a fifth wave here in Washington. And in proportion to that, we are seeing an increase in the number of children requiring hospitalization and intensive care. “

He said that to protect young children who cannot get vaccinated, other family members need to get vaccinated.
