Secret Service members asked about full-time protection of former President Trump in Florida: sources

Agents in Trump details have been asked about relocation to West Palm Beach.

As states begin to certify the election results that seal President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, even though Donald Trump has not acknowledged that there is a clear sign his post-presidential life is taking shape: agents of the Secret Service in the details of the president are being questioned whether they wish to be transferred to Palm Beach, Florida, sources told ABC News.

The local secret service office in Miami has also started seeking physical reinforcement at Mar-a-Largo, the president’s club he refers to as “the Winter White House,” the sources added. These moves are considered unofficial because Trump has yet to concede to Biden.

Trump, a longtime New Yorker born in the borough of Queens, moved to Florida last year and voted there in late October.

Arriving by ABC News, a spokesperson for the Secret Service said: “For operational security reasons, the Secret Service does not discuss specifically or in general terms the means, methods or resources that we use to carry out our mission of protection.”

A spokesperson for the Trump organization declined to comment.

Renovations to the living quarters that are slated to be occupied by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are underway, ahead of when they will live there full-time after the Jan.20 inauguration, sources close to Planning.

Sources described the renovations as “updates” to the living quarters, in part because the residence was only used temporarily. The Mar-a-Lago club had also only been open seasonally, and it’s still unclear how a permanent residence for Donald and Melania Trump could change that.

While Trump will need to spend at least six months per calendar year in Florida to maintain his residency status, the 74-year-old is expected to spend time at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey and New York, according to the sources, who added that all post-presidency plans remain fluid.

A law enforcement source told ABC News that on January 21, the New York Police Department planned to work with the Secret Service to reduce the law enforcement footprint around Trump Tower in Manhattan because it does not will no longer be Trump’s primary residence.

The result, according to the source, will be freer traffic along Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue.

The NYPD also expects 56th Street adjacent to the Trump Tower to reopen to traffic, which will relieve congestion in Midtown, according to the source.
