A photo taken in May by Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter of NASA shows an avalanche of ice falling on the planet.

What they mean: "Each spring, the sun shines on the side of the layer stack located at the North Pole of Mars, known as North-polar stratified deposits.The heat destabilizes the ice and releases the blocks," said the NASA in a description.

  • "When they reach the bottom of the cliff more than 500 meters high, the blocks raise a cloud of dust."

The MRO has been broadcasting photos of Martian geology since it came into orbit around the planet in 2006..

The bottom line: A fleet of satellites in orbit around Mars allows us to observe the changing face of the red planet throughout the year. Sometimes, its surface looks remarkably like the Earth.
