Georgia’s Senator David Perdue is in quarantine after contact with a person who tested positive for Covid-19, his campaign announced Thursday, less than a week before the second round of the Republican election against Jon Ossoff.
Perdue, 71, tested negative for the coronavirus, according to his campaign.
His second round against Ossoff is one of two rounds in Georgia that will determine whether Republicans or Democrats will have majority control over the US Senate in 2021.
In the other race, outgoing Senator Kelly Loeffler, Republican compatriot of Perdue, faces the Democratic Reverend Raphael Warnock.
“This morning, Senator Perdue was informed that he had come into close contact with someone in the campaign who had tested positive for COVID-19,” Perdue’s campaign said in a statement.
“Senator Perdue and his wife tested negative today, but on the recommendation of his doctor and as directed by the CDC, they will be quarantined. The senator and his wife have been tested regularly throughout the campaign, and the team will continue to follow CDC guidelines. Further information will be provided when available. “
Perdue was scheduled to appear with Loeffler at a New Years Eve rally and campaign concert in Gainesville on Thursday afternoon.
In the final days before Tuesday’s second round, Republicans stepped up efforts to exit the vote, as data shows Democrats had an advantage in early voter turnout.
President Donald Trump is due to campaign in Georgia for Perdue and Loeffler on Monday.
