General Gilbert Diendéré, one of the presumed brains of the failed 2015 coup in Burkina Faso, was implicated for the first time since the trial began by a co-accused.
General Diendéré "instructed (given the instruction) to make the coup", said Tuesday at the helm Warrant Officer Jean-Florent Nion, fourth accused to testify in this historic trial.
On September 16, 2015, soldiers of the Presidential Security Regiment (RSP) tried unsuccessfully to overthrow the transitional government set up after the fall of President Blaise Compaore. The RSP was the former Praetorian guard of Mr. Compaore, driven in October 2014 by the street after 27 years in power.
General Diendéré had explained during the instruction to have "had to assume the putsch perpetrated by a group of "elements" of the former RSP, according to the military prosecutor.
He is the main accused of the trial with General Djibril Bassolé, former foreign minister of the Compaoré regime.
Missed coup left 14 dead and 270 wounded
"On September 16 (2015), I was in the break room when I was woken up by Chief Warrant Officer Eloi Badiel and Sergeant Chief Koussoubé Roger who informed me that General Diendéré has instructed to make a coup today. Given the seriousness of the information I asked to see the general directly, "said the adjutant Nion, the first accused to directly question the former chief of staff of President Compaore.
"I went to the home of General Diendéré to whom I explained the facts. In return, the general asked if it was not done yet. I realized that he knew about it and I went back to the presidential palace.
A few hours later, Warrant Officer Nion will board a vehicle with several soldiers and they will burst into the Council Chamber. , enjoining the President of the Transitional Regime, his Prime Minister and two other members of the Government to follow them.
Accused of "Attack on State Security", "Murders and Willful Assault", and incitement to disobey military discipline, "Adjutant Nion said" partially recognize the facts "that he is accused of.
In his defense, he explained that he had" been embarked on a situation from which I could not escape. at the risk of reprisals ". "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. If I were not on duty on the day, I might not be in front of that bar, "he said.
" We chose from the start to tell the truth. It's not a defense strategy, it's about what happened, and it's up to the court to decide, with that in mind. It is only by telling the truth that we defend ourselves the best, "said his lawyer Adrien Nion.
" It is not easy for an element of the former RSP to come to the bar to come and say things clear and clear, the truth against his old comrades. It is a courage to be praised, "said Ambroise Farama, a lawyer for the civil parties.
