In Burkina Faso, the People's Republic of China inaugurated its embassy Thursday, July 12 in Ouagadougou, just over a month after the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. A new era is opening, believe the leaders of both countries.
Several Chinese specialists working in the fields of health, agriculture, vocational training, energy and infrastructure are already on site in Ouagadougou. The country still expects much more from this cooperation as part of the implementation of the government's roadmap to 2020.
Although the People's Republic of China has taken on board many projects initiated by Taiwan the Burkinabè authorities are still waiting for much of this resumption of diplomatic and cooperation relations. Expectations in several areas, as contained in the national plan for economic and social development, the roadmap of the government until 2020: " Boosting the growth sector for the national economy by breaking all constraints beforehand major factors in the development of our national economy, which is reflected in shortcomings in the field of energy, infrastructure and information and communication technologies. On the Chinese side, the Deputy Prime Minister promises his country's commitment to accompany Burkina Faso and offer more opportunities for development.
At the end of May the President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré announced the end of diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Until then, Burkina was among the last two countries in Africa, with Swaziland, to recognize Taipei at the expense of mainland China. This decision marks the beginning of a deeper economic relationship with Beijing, more interesting for Burkina Faso, as Pierre Jacquemot, associate researcher at the Institute for International and Strategic Relations (Iris) explains.
This restoration of links first obeys economic objectives: Beijing promises significant health spending – we are talking about a large hospital in Bobo-Dioulasso, the second largest city in the country – in the field of education. This became indispensable for some regional investments. I think of the railway. China refused to consider intervening in this sector since the railway concerned one of the countries that did not yet recognize Beijing. These reasons are very prosaic, but diplomacy is sometimes a little cynical and obeys strategic and economic interests before other considerations.
