Czech minority government wins vote of confidence

The Lower House of the Czech Parliament granted Wednesday night its confidence in the new minority government led by Andrej Babis, according to an unofficial count of votes.

The Czech minority government of billionaire prime minister Andrej Babis won the vote of confidence on Thursday (July 12th) thanks to the support of the communists, AFP reported.

This is the first Czech government to reach the power with the support of the Communist Party since the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989. "Parliament has given confidence to the cabinet" Speaker Radek Vondracek said a vote taken after a marathon session of more than 16 hours. No viable cabinet

M. Babic, facing accusations of EU subsidy fraud, has been striving since his October legislative elections to form a government.

Babis' centrist and populist (ANO) movement – country, founder of agro-food giant Agrofert and who also controls two major daily newspapers – largely won the legislative elections of October 2017.

Having failed since to establish a viable cabinet, Mr. Babis has allied with the social Democrats to form a minority government appointed by President Milos Zeman on June 27. The fight against illegal immigration, corruption and waste is one of the main objectives of the cabinet.

Communist support

Communists, openly pro-Russian and anti-NATO, assured him of their informal support for his government in exchange for positions in public companies. "This situation represents a change, but it is not a revolution" told AFP political analyst Tomas Lebeda

Several hundred demonstrators gathered in front of the parliament Wednesday to protest against this informal alliance with the Communist Party.
