Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will travel this week to Zambia and South Africa, where a summit of the five Brics countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) is to be held, announced yesterday the Turkish Presidency. Turkey is not part of this group that brings together the major emerging economies, but it must attend the summit to be held in Johannesburg as the current chair of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), said the presidency. Erdogan, who will be in South Africa from July 25-27, is also expected to meet with his Russian counterpart on the sidelines of the summit. He will travel to Zambia on July 28, where he will make the first visit of a Turkish head of state, the presidency said. The Turkish president has made the expansion of the Turkish presence in Africa one of the priorities of his foreign policy. Since being elected President in 2014, he has visited 20 African countries. This move will be the first in Africa since his re-election on June 24 for a second term with increased powers.
