Nearly 50 Malians momentarily hijacked their ambassador and election materials on Saturday, demanding that they be paid after spending 40 days distributing voter cards to their 27,000 registered compatriots on the lists of electors for the presidential election this Sunday.

At the end of their mission, they received each 30,000 FCFA, an envelope considered insufficient, hence their anger they expressed by taking hostage their ambassador recently accredited in Gabon and who has not yet presented his Gabonese credentials and confiscating the electoral material planned for Sunday's vote.

Faced with the seriousness of the situation, the Malian diplomatic authorities requested the presence of a riot police unit that managed to calming these angry Malians.

Gabon is the Central African country with the most Malian nationals.

Outgoing President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita was last Thursday in Libreville where he held a big meeting in front of more than 8.000 Malians, according to the organizers
