Nigeria Air will be a public-private partnership but will however be led entirely by the private sector. The government will not own more than 5% of the group. The new company plans to operate 84 domestic, regional and international lines.

The new promised airline will replace the deceased Nigeria Search Nigeria Airways which ceased its activities in 2003. The creation of the new airline is one of the promises of the President Muhammadu Buhari during the presidential campaign in 2015.
