Having arrived in Montreal for barely two years, the Senegalese-born artist Ibnou Diaye (aka Noubi) is preparing to organize a great musical festival to launch his new album, as part of 32nd Nuits d'Afrique, presented from July 10 to 22.
It is no coincidence that Noubi chose the Festival Nuits d'Afrique for the launch of Color terre his first record created in Quebec: it was the production company associated with this event that gave him the chance to go on stage in Montreal for the first time, a few months after his arrival.
" It was in Balattou, the January 29, 2017, in the middle of winter! ", exclaims the guitarist and singer, referring to a room on boulevard Saint-Laurent which is a cult place for world music concerts in Montreal. " I played for the first time with the excellent musicians I had met [ndlr : Vincent Duhaime Perreault (guitare) et Carlo Birri (basse)] and I also met a curious, generous, thirsty diversity. to give a lot. Since then, Noubi's pop-reggae-funk-jazz trio has multiplied mentions and awards for festivals, including the prestigious Syli Bronze. The artist has recently presented a great concert on an outdoor stage of the famous Montreal International Jazz Festival, and he is delighted to be part of the Nuits d'Afrique.
From Saint-Louis to Montreal , passing through Toulouse
It is in Saint-Louis (Senegal), his hometown, that Noubi presented the first official show of his career, at the Jazz Festival, with his band Ndiol'Or Folk . He then immigrated to Toulouse, where he built essential links. " My friends from Toulouse helped me a lot in my artistic journey, thanks to all the remarkable encounters I made there that Noubi was born" esteems the musician.
In France, Noubi participated in several artistic projects (Kaland-O, Diet Y ba), whose common point was to have a " style without style" as he likes the to joke. Discovering cajon

Noubi then temporarily set aside his guitar to become familiar with the cajón, a Peruvian percussion instrument. " I needed to reduce my training, to draw on my roots, to offer something acoustic and to have contact with wood, nature, the cajón was perfect" explains he
He says he has been locked up for months in his apartment to learn this new instrument, explore the relationship between rhythm and voice, and adapt his songs already composed to the guitar. Then he discovered the importance of the history of the cajón: " After working in the fields, African slaves used the crates in which they put fruits and vegetables as percussion, to let off steam, to sing … It is related to my story, as an African " Noubi declares.
A complete first album created in Quebec
Now guitarist, percussionist and singer, Noubi continues his musical destiny in Montreal. He is happy to present soon his new album, Color Earth whose launch will take place on July 14th. In addition to appealing to several invited artists, the acoustic opus maintains the stylistic openness that made its mark, and integrates songs in Wolof, French and English that carry a social message, for example on immigration
