South Africa has issued a limited number of banknotes and coins to mark the 100th anniversary of former President and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela.

South African Reserve Bank stated that the new notes have traced Mandela's historic journey, from his education in the Eastern Cape countryside, to his activism in Soweto against the last racist regime of the continent, to his 27-year incarceration on Robben Island and the the ensuing period of democracy.

"What is more appropriate than commemorating one's life with an instrument we use every day? Money touches us all, young and old. Utata "(grandfather) represents the best version of ourselves as South Africans and there is no more appropriate occasion than the anniversary of his centennial to honor all he represents with these commemorative notes and the five rand coin, "said Lesetja Kganyago, governor of South Africa's central bank.

The play was designed by Zimbabwean-born Sindiso Nyoni, whose works openly criticize former president Robert Mugabe. Nyoni said any artist would dream of seeing his work firmly rooted in history. 19659003] "For me, it's more of a kind of heritage in the sense that it's something that will last a long time and I think that as an artist or graphic designer, we have always sorted, or have always sought to have a place in history, "said Sindiso Nyoni, graphic designer.

The banknotes and coins are part of a series of events that will last a month around the world, culminating in a conference next week by former US President Barack Obama.
