Thursdays September 2, 9 and 16 – Ascidians: The Sharks! Sessions at 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
Children from 18 months to 3 years old, accompanied by an adult, are invited to discover the museum together through music, storytelling and special activities. Join us for story time and a take-out craft, available while supplies last. The sessions last 15-20 minutes. Capacity is limited. No pre-registration: register at the admissions desk upon arrival.
Fridays September 3 and 17 – Dee of Sainte-Marie Sailing at sunset
Cruise in the evening on the historic Dee of Sainte-Marie from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on 3/9 or from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on 17/9. The fee is $ 35 per person, adults only. Guests are welcome to bring their own drink; select your choice of sandwich during registration. Saturday September 4 – Pirate Day 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Ah the scallywags! Have you ever wondered how to navigate the sea? Or what makes a sailboat move? Join us on pirate day to have a blast! Create your own map, explore the meaning of the “Jolly Roger” and other pirate flags, and much more. Sing out fun pirate shacks at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Do activities at home while supplies last. Activities included with admission to the museum.
Friday September 10 – Night at the Musée des Amis Handicapés 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
This FREE evening of entertainment is offered in cooperation with Calvert County Parks and Recreation Therapeutic Recreation Services. The museum and grounds will be open exclusively to people with disabilities and their families, friends or carers. Enjoy the skates and rays, fish, fossils, maritime history and have fun in a relaxed and supportive environment. Shop in the museum shop, learn about river otters, and hop aboard the Wm. B. Tennison for a 30-minute cruise! Pre-registration is recommended so that everyone can access the interior exhibitions of the museum. Sunday September 12 – Dee of Sainte-Marie Public sailing 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Enjoy an afternoon of sailing on the Dee of Sainte-Marie, departing from the museum platform. Fees are $ 25 for 13 years old and over, $ 15 for children 5 to 12 years old. Monday September 13 – Virtual Fossil Club meeting and conference
Fossil Club meeting at 7:00 p.m., followed by a free public lecture at 7:30 p.m. by Dr. Bruce MacFadden titled “Early Miocene Land Mammals of Belgrade, North Carolina: Connections to Citizen Science and the FOSSIL Project”. Dr MacFadden is Professor Emeritus and Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Florida Museum of Natural History. Thursday September 16 – Sharks! Sink your teeth! Lecture series 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.
The first in a four-part series associated with the museum’s latest exhibit, this lecture is entitled “Maryland Fossil Sharks: What Stories Do Shark Teeth Tell?” »Given by Dr Victor Perez, assistant curator of the CMM in paleontology. The conference is free, open to the public and will take place in the museum’s Harms Gallery.
Monday September 20 – CMM members save 20%
Museum members receive a 20% discount in the Museum Boutique, today and on the 20th of each month.
Thursdays, September 23 and 30 – Small minnows: Sharks, no qualms about it! 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
This program focuses on one of the three themes of the museum. Preschoolers ages 3-5, accompanied by an adult, are welcome to join us for story time and a take-out craft, available while supplies last. Sessions last 25 to 40 minutes. Capacity is limited. No pre-registration: register at the admissions desk upon arrival.
Saturday, September 25 – Construction of toy boats 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
The toy boat building, sponsored by the Patuxent Small Craft Guild, has been a part of the museum for over 30 years. This activity is ideal for ages 5 and up and will take place outdoors in the Pavillon Nature Corbin. Admission to the museum applies and a donation of $ 2 per boat is requested. Capacity is limited; visitors will be greeted on a first come, first served basis.
Thursday September 30 – The Sharks! Sink in your teeth! Lecture series 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.
The second in a four-part series associated with the museum’s latest exhibition, this lecture is entitled “Miocene Sharks and the Origins of Modern Shark Fauna”, given by Dr Bretton Kent, Senior Lecturer at the University of Maryland, College Park. The conference is free, open to the public and will take place in the museum’s Harms Gallery.
