As soon as they stopped giving mice to doxycycline, the animals were "rejuvenated" because it was possible to restore the mitochondrial DNA.
"As far as we know, this knowledge has never been recorded before," said Kesav Sin, a professor of genetics at the UAB School of Medicine.
Although the elimination of doxycycline in mice affected the aging process of the skin, no major changes were observed on other organs, which could mean that the Mitochondria play a different role in different parts of the body. This discovery in mice could become the basis of work on preventive and therapeutic drugs that will strengthen the mitochondrial functions for anti-aging skin and hair treatments, but also for the treatment of other pathologies in which the dysfunctions mitochondria play an important role.
