Geneticists have succeeded in reversing the aging process of the skin

Geneticists at the University of Alabama have successfully reversed the aging process in mice by detecting changes in the cells that cause wrinkles, hair loss and growth of the seven. mice were first artificially stimulated by age, and the elimination of this therapy led to the elimination of the color and red color of the colored hair.

In the first part of the experiment, they used an antibiotic that causes aging so that the mitochondria in the cells make it dysfunctional.

Geneticists deliberately induced aging in mice by adding an antibiotic to doxycycline in food and water. Doxycycline affects the enzyme required for the replication of mitochondrial DNA, which depletes stocks and causes them to malfunction.

As we age, the mitochondria, which are the source of cellular energy, begin to lose their function. Since mitochondria produce about 90% of the energy needed by living cells, the decrease in their functionality stimulates the development of diseases characteristic of the elderly, for example, cardiovascular diseases or carcinomas. After four weeks of administering doxycycline, the mice began to sit down and lose their hair, they became slow and lethargic. After four to eight weeks, their skin was dressed

. The administration of doxycycline in mice caused an increase in the number of skin cells, an abnormal hardening of the outer layer, dysfunctional hair follicles and the development of inflammation.

As soon as they stopped giving mice to doxycycline, the animals were "rejuvenated" because it was possible to restore the mitochondrial DNA.

"As far as we know, this knowledge has never been recorded before," said Kesav Sin, a professor of genetics at the UAB School of Medicine.

Although the elimination of doxycycline in mice affected the skin aging process, no major changes were observed on other organs, which could mean that mitochondria play a different role in different parts of the body. This discovery in mice could become the basis of work on preventive and therapeutic drugs that will strengthen the mitochondrial functions for anti-aging skin and hair treatments, but also for the treatment of other pathologies in which the dysfunctions mitochondria play an important role.
