Thousands of people in Serbia are infected with a dangerous West Nile virus and they do not know it, warns epidemiologist Zoran Radovanovic! According to him, the symptoms of mosquito-borne infections occur only a few weeks after the sting, and how dangerous this disease is, according to the data that in just seven days, three people were killed in our country.
For now, more than 41 people have reported severe symptoms of the disease, and it is symptomatic that the number of sick people doubles almost every seven days. The most vulnerable are over 70 years old, children, pregnant women and chronic patients due to lower immunity. What is worse, a true epidemic on a larger scale is expected only in August, because up to now there have been 53 hotspots in Serbia where there are mosquitoes carrying this virus and almost all north of the Sava and the Danube.
Spread of Infection
According to Batut data, three men over 70 years were among the victims of fever.
– 41 cases of West Nile fever were recorded in the territory of Serbia and three men aged 72 to 84 died of chronic diseases died. The three victims lived on the territory of South Bačka District. Of the 41 patients, 27 are men and 14 are women aged 31 to 84 years. In addition, 31 patients already had a chronic illness – says Batuta.
Epidemiologist Zoran Radovanovic notes that right now there are at least thousands of people in Serbia, but most do not know that he is carrying the West Nile virus.
– It is true that 41 people are more seriously ill, which is proven by tests, but the number of infections is incomparably higher. We can say freely that in Serbia there are currently thousands of people who carry the West Nile virus in themselves, and that they do not know it, so this can be dangerous when the person is sick. incubation begins, which can take weeks. Some people have no symptoms, a number of flu-like symptoms, and a minimal number of serious complications and deaths. Only one in 150 patients has inflammation of the brain or brain envelopes, which is also the biggest complication that this virus is transmitting. Elders are the older ones, as well as small children and pregnant women, "Radovanovic noted, adding that after the mosquito bites, the first symptoms appeared only after seven to fifteen days .
That it is only the beginning of the spread of infection and that the peak of the disease is expected in August, warns the infectious agent Dr. Žarko Ranković.
– This is a seasonal illness that starts in May and ends in October, when there are more mosquitoes. And according to statistics that three people died in seven days, I am afraid that this year the outbreak may take serious conditions, with a large number of patients. The biggest problem is that this infection has been paralyzed, it is difficult to detect. In about 80% of cases, the infected patient does not know that there is fever in West Nile, about 15% of them suffer from fatigue, fever, rash and muscle pain and only 5% can suffer from inflammation and central nervous system disorders. system, coma, even death. Therefore, if you notice some of these problems after the bite, you must contact a doctor – says Dr. Rankovic.
He points out that there is no treatment for West Nile fever and that prevention is the only solution.
– There is no cure for this disease. This is why it is best to dust off the air regularly, but also avoid night walks at the edge of the water where most mosquitoes are found. While for those who stay on the outside, forcing lubrication with bacteria protection agents, even in the home, it is good to have devices or spirals that cause these insects – advise Informer. rs.
