Raleigh, North Carolina – Two Raleigh raccoons recently tested positive for rabies after coming into contact with dogs.
Animal control officers responded to two separate incidents in September.
On September 15, a raccoon killed in a fight with a dog at Old Mill Place tested positive for rabies.
On September 29, a raccoon described as “acting abnormally” came into contact with a dog on Lions Way. He was secured and also tested positive for rabies.
Fortunately, in both incidents, the dog’s rabies vaccinations were up to date. The owners of the dogs were given advice on the appropriate action to take.
Another rabid raccoon came into contact with two dogs on Arrowwood Drive in Raleigh last May.

Wake County health officials provide the following general tips to help minimize the risk of rabies:
- Residents should not approach animals they do not know.
- Residents should ensure their pets have an up-to-date rabies vaccine. If an animal is allowed outdoors, a booster vaccine is recommended. Pets outside should be kept indoors until they receive booster shots.
- Do not feed stray or unfamiliar animals, including cats and dogs.
- Do not leave trash or food outside unless it is in a garbage can with a tight fitting lid.
- If an animal is fed outdoors, do not leave food outside overnight.
- If an animal comes into contact with an animal that may be rabid, contact a veterinarian immediately.
