Shannen Doherty has posted “truthful” photos from her battle with stage 4 breast cancer to encourage her subscribers to start screening for the disease.
Sharing the candid images on Instagram Thursday, the former “Beverly Hills, 90210” star described her brutal, multiple-diagnosis journey to “cut the fear” of what lies ahead.
“For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I would like to share more of my personal journey, from my first diagnosis to my second. Is everything pretty? NO, but it’s true and my shared hope is that we all become more educated, more familiar with what cancer looks like, ”wrote Doherty, 50.
“I hope that I will encourage people to have mammograms, to have regular exams, to overcome the fear and to face whatever may be in front of you.”
The former “Charmed” star, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015 before going into remission in April 2017, graphically detailed the treatments she underwent, which included a mastectomy , chemo and radiotherapy.
“I had a lot of nosebleeds from the chemo,” said Doherty, who said she turned to wearing fun pajamas to relieve some of the mental and physical pain. “I don’t know if any of you went through this. I was also more than tired.
Doherty then announced in February 2020 that she was battling stage 4 breast cancer and since then has provided fans with regular updates, more recently telling them that she is “fighting to stay alive.”
“I never want to operate [like I’m dying]”, she said Monday in” Good Morning America “.
“I just want to operate because I don’t have things to check because I will continue to fight to stay alive.”
Doherty also explained that she is thankfully still on her “first protocol” of treatment.
“It’s like if you just want to make your protocols last as long as possible so you don’t run out,” she explained.
