The online comedy community is reeling from the hit and run murder of beloved internet personality and podcast host Mat George.
George, 26, hosted the dating and pop culture podcast “She Rates Dogs” with Michaela Okland, who announced her death in a tweet on Saturday.
“I would prefer you to be here [sic] this from me than a news article, “Okland wrote, later adding,” I know he’s laughing at me for having such a stupid typo in the first sentence of this. ”
The tweet continued, “I don’t really have any other words at the moment. I wish I could contact anyone who knows him personally, but the news is out already and I just can’t do it at the moment. . “

The Los Angeles Police Department’s West Traffic Division confirmed to Insider that the hit-and-run occurred around 2:20 a.m. on Saturday in West Hollywood. George was struck while crossing the street by a driver of a white BMW who has not yet been identified, police said. He died at the scene. Los Angeles Police are investigating the incident, a representative told Insider.
“Mat was such a beacon to so many people,” George’s former roommate and friend Daniel Spalinger told Insider. “He was loving, funny and so positive about everything.”
George, who was openly gay, was known for viral moments on the internet like measuring a microwave with bottles of vodka, which was written by BuzzFeed in 2017. He wrote numerous viral tweets and ran a parody Twitter account where he pretended to be straight in an attempt to get cast on reality TV shows.
The podcast host moved to Los Angeles last year to pursue a career in entertainment after graduating from Arizona State University with a biology degree in 2017. His name made the rounds on Twitter on Saturday, as eminent Internet personalities have paid tribute to him, including a comedy writer. Abby Govindan, who said that he had “hundreds” of friendships.
Govindan said that although George was harassed on Twitter, he “had an irreproachable talent for taking it in stride and making a joke that his followers could laugh at.”

Ellie Schnitt, Twitter personality with over 550,000 followers, mentionned that George was “incomparably funny, incomparably kind and one of the best people I know.”
Days before his death, George was all the rage on Twitter after posting a photo claiming to show his mother with Snoop Dogg, but he was actually an imitator. The rapper himself George tweeted a quote and wrote: “What Dogg?”
Twitter Personality Diane Alston told Insider that George would be remembered “not only for his humor and how contagious his own happiness was, but also for his hospitality.”
Alston continued, “He had a way to make people who barely know him feel included.”
George’s friend Spalinger highlighted his lasting impact on internet culture.
“He would cheer up anyone with his witty jokes and charismatic personality,” Spalinger said. “Its impact has spread across social media and so many people are affected.”
Spalinger continued, “It was impossible to be anything other than being happy when Mat was around.”
