She was devastated by her miscarriage. Then came the $ 4,500 bill

About 10% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, sometimes leaving families with unexpected medical bills. Last year, Lauren Dill lost her son, Simon Augustus, four months ahead of schedule.

"My midwife came in and she said that it was a perfect little baby without a heartbeat, and these words are simply etched in my memory," said Dill.

She had what is called a "silent" miscarriage, probably caused by a blood clot in the umbilical cord. She was induced and spent the next nine hours at work.

"I knew that once I delivered it, it would not have been long before I had to say goodbye, it was difficult," Dill said.

Shortly thereafter, medical bills began to flow for ultrasound, medical examinations, as well as parts of labor and deliveries not covered by his insurer. The couple's total expenses were $ 4,500, more than the cost of the future birth of her other son.

"I pay for the delivery of my baby who has died, and it is difficult," said Dill.

It is not uncommon for women to pay extra for miscarriage procedures, as the costs for vaginal deliveries, caesarean sections or surgical D & C treatments may vary depending on location, level of Anesthesia, co-payments and different deductibles. But for families in mourning, it's often too much.

Alex and Jodi Laughlin lost the baby girl they called Noelle in the seventh month of their pregnancy. She lived only 32 minutes. Then, the insurance company refused to follow up on two in utero surgical procedures to save the baby's life, at a cost of about $ 42,000. They fought the bills, but finally paid $ 5,000.

"You come back with a box of personal items and no baby.And you come home with bills. That you get out of what you just went through, "said Alex Laughlin.

They now have a one year old daughter, but are creating a foundation called Noelle's Light to help other families.

"We know this can be a really tough road," said Laughlin.

Lauren Dill has two other children, but says that Simon's loss never leaves.

"We do not want to forget him, he lived and belongs to our family," she said.
