"Shell on" challenge is the latest dangerous trend of Snapchat

Teens are challenging themselves by eating plastic wrappers, cardboard boxes and fruit zests – and posting videos of themselves doing it for Snapchat – in a bizarre new trend of social media called "shell on" .

Although they are not as dangerous as the potentially fatal "Tide Pod Challenge" that involved eating laundry detergent capsules, doctors still do not recommend eating anything that is not food.

"Organic materials such as fruit peels are generally not dangerous. The zest is often used in recipes (lemon zest), which are the chips of the crust, "said The Post's Chicago area doctor, Max Plitt. "On the other hand, eating plastic can be dangerous. BPA has been suggested to influence hormones. Chemicals in PVC, such as vinyl chloride, have been associated with cancer. "

A recent video on Snapchat shows Liam Hamm, a sophomore at McClintock High School in Tempe, Arizona, biting into a plastic bag filled with carrots.

"You'll eat your lunch with or without a hull," reads the legend with the video showing Hamm tearing a plastic package with his teeth.

Hamm told Arizona Republic that he had seen dozens of teenagers posting "shell on" videos on Snapchat, including a video in which a teenager bites into a lemon and accidentally throws lemon juice in his eyes.

"It's funny, it's because it's not really a shell, but people call it shells. I guess that's what's funny about it, "said Hamm.

Hamm said that he did not know where the trend was coming from, but that he was glad it was not Tide Pods.

"It's the Tide Pod challenge, minus the fact that it's not dangerous," he said.

Although the trend is mainly on Snapchat, several people have blasted the teenagers in the videos on Twitter.

"I was wondering why the baby boomers were judging GenZ until I saw a common thread about" Shell on the challenge. "After 12 videos of high school students eating bananas with their skin … I can finally say that I'm linked to the Boomers," Devin Spinks tweeted.

"Idk about this" shell on the challenge ", but I'm eating the whole apple, base and all, for years," wrote KG.
